Primary School

Where curiosity becomes a love of learning

The Primary School years establish the foundation for everything that follows, and a three-year-old who starts here can walk the same oak-lined path to a high school diploma.

Our Pre-K and kindergarten program is designed to nurture curiosity, confidence, language development, early reasoning, social engagement, and a positive relationship with learning. At this age, readiness varies considerably from one child to another, so teachers respond to those differences while providing developmentally appropriate challenge and support. The room is set up with low tables, open shelves of materials, and work a child can choose and complete, so independence grows alongside the skills.

The foundations, taught to readiness

Reading, writing, and mathematics are personalized to each child, and students progress as the essential skills become secure.

Reading and foundational literacy

Phonological and phonemic awareness, letter-sound relationships, vocabulary, listening comprehension, decoding, fluency, and emerging comprehension, so that increasingly complex reading skills are built on a strong base. We want children to associate reading with discovery, imagination, meaning, and enjoyment.

Writing and communication

Handwriting, letter formation, spelling, vocabulary, sentence development, organization, and the ability to communicate ideas in increasingly independent ways. The goal isn't simply correct mechanics. It's for children to understand that writing is a meaningful tool for sharing ideas, experiences, and imagination.

Mathematics and numeracy

Number sense, quantities, patterns, spatial relationships, shapes, measurement, comparison, mathematical language, and early problem-solving through concrete, hands-on experiences that build understanding rather than memorized procedures.

Learning in community

Science, social studies, world languages, physical education, art, performing arts, and other enrichment experiences are taught in group settings.

Inquiry and observation

Science and social studies introduce children to asking questions, looking closely, and learning about the world around them.

Movement and expression

Physical education, art, and performing arts bring creative expression, movement, and communication into every week.

Being part of a classroom

Children begin learning how to take part in a classroom community: collaboration, taking turns, listening, and sharing ideas.

The goal of Primary School is more than readiness for first grade. It's the development of confident, curious learners who are ready to engage with increasingly complex ideas in Lower School. Request a visit
