Who is Killian Oaks for?

Students whose education needs to be designed around them. That includes the child who learns differently, the child who has fallen behind and needs to catch up with confidence intact, the child who is ready for more than a large classroom offers, and students arriving from other countries. The admissions assessment tells both of us whether the fit is right.

Is Killian Oaks a school for students who learn differently?

Children learn differently, and that has never meant we expect less of them. Our method, personalized instruction taught to mastery with structured multi-sensory reading, was built around that idea. Our Director holds a doctorate in exceptional student education specializing in learning disabilities, the school accepts the Florida scholarship for unique abilities, and the same classrooms serve students who simply need instruction matched to them and students who are ready for more.

What does teaching to mastery mean?

In reading, writing, and mathematics, students progress according to demonstrated understanding rather than age or grade level, and they're generally expected to show approximately 85 to 90% mastery of a skill before the next, more complex skill is introduced. A student who doesn't reach it is retaught using a different strategy and reassessed. Science, social studies, world languages, the arts, and physical education are taught in group settings.

How big are the classes?

Small enough that every teacher knows every student and can adjust instruction to each one. The school maintains a low student to teacher ratio, and the summer program runs classes of six to eight. Ask about the specific class your child would join when you visit.

What grades do you serve?
